8/27/2023 0 Comments Download grand hotel alimuri![]() We loved this hotel!! There are negative reviews which we didn’t even bother to look at before we went. We are still here as I write, off home today, but will return, and as a final note, this is definitely a 4 star hotel, and having done 20 countries in 2 years before Covid, we are seasoned travellers… If you want an exploring base from a beachfront ( how many of those do you get in Sorrento) this is ideal, but if you want busy nightlife and bar cruising in Sorrento, again maybe not for you. Staff were all friendly from cleaners to Francesco on the front desk. Contrary to a lot of the reviews, the evening meal is all buffet style, from start to finish, which suited us. Chips are always on offer together with a plainer main course if required. Food was lovely breakfast and evening, with lots of local Italian dishes which you certainly wouldn't recognise from Frankie and Bennie's, pizza and lasagna it isn't. If however you want to feel you have gone back in time to a piece of individual, sometimes quirky Italian luxury then this will suit perfectly. If you want a Radisson blu cookie cutter resort hotel then this is not for you. We read between the lines of the reviews beforehand, and therefore got exactly what we expected. ![]() This is Italy, the land of great food but sadly not at this hotel.… Wine wasn’t very good quality and €4 for a bottle of water which always came opened to the table suggests it was tap water. A majority of the staff didn’t want to engage with guests and were could be quite rude at times. We told a waitress one evening that the fish was cold, no problem she said, I will replace it with freshly cooked and bring some to your table… she didn’t turn up and the newly replaced fish on the buffet was still cold!! They kept missing the main ingredient out for the whole week…”taste”. If you don’t eat as soon as the buffet opens you have a cold buffet to contend with. Evening meal is full buffet!! It’s a 4 star hotel with one star food. Breakfast, ok there is a fresh omelette station but the rest of the buffet is very average with awful coffee and fruit juice. The positives.Wonderfully situated next to the beach, very clean hotel with nice comfortable rooms. Would we return to the Hotel? Absolutely! However, I would not recommend the hotel if you have mobility issues due to its location at the bottom of the hill. Did we enjoy our holiday despite the weather? Yes. They do not sell return tickets, so buy 2 singles at Sorrento to avoid the queue at the ticket office at Pompeii. Train to Pompeii (go into Sorrento on the bus to catch the train as it will be full by the time it gets to Meta) entrance to Pompeii and 2 hour guided tour of highlights, time to explore on your own, return by train (getting off in Meta and walking down the hill) less than 45 euros per person. We felt that the Tui trips were quite expensive and it is possible to organise your own trips. The hotel is an excellent base for exploring the area. The evening entertainment was extremely low key and only on 4 of the nights during our stay. in Meta, but they were only obvious during the last few days of our stay, partly because it was quite early in the season and partly due to the unseasonably wet weather they were not always open. The food could have been hotter, as could the plates. If you don't like pasta, tomatoes or cheese, Italy is not the destination for you. Meals were buffet style, (not as described by Tui) which suited us, and there was a good choice of mainly Italian and continental dishes, with just a nod to the British palate -obviously a number of pasta dishes, but always meat and fish dishes and chips. A kettle is available in the room and tea, coffee and milk are replenished daily. Our room was kept spotless throughout our stay, towels were changed daily and bedding changed during the week. All staff, from the front reception, through waiters and bar staff, to the cleaners were extremely friendly and helpful. Meta also has a railway station and is on the Sorrento/Naples line. The hotel also offers a shuttle bus, but you need to book this. It is situated at the bottom of a steep road, but the local bus stop is about 200 metres away (through the tunnel) and there is a frequent service into Sorrento. True, as with all areas of the hospitality sector, it has suffered through Covid, but is now undergoing redecoration and repair. The hotel is not modern and bland, but has a certain faded elegance and is reminiscent of a bygone age. It is well worth paying for a sea view room. ![]() The hotel is at the foot of the cliff and has a fabulous view across the bay of Naples towards the island of Ischia and the Marina Piccolo in Sorrento. We've just returned from a lovely week at Mar Hotel Alimuri, Meta, close to Sorrento.
